Over the past week, some of our readers have reported on the BIOS recovery process for the Acer Aspire 5920g. g.Description: The BIOS recovery feature is used to recover the affected computer from a Power On Self Test (POST) or boot failure caused by BIOS corruption.

I downloaded the latest BIOS update v1.08 from the Acer website when I was looking for my computer model (Acer Aspire 5349). I selected the Windows Flash Update which is located in the Windows directory. For some reason, my computer froze while updating the BIOS. I also decided to restart the laptop. This interrupted the BIOS and the update made my screen black and I clearly could not work with Windows 7 (Home Premium 32bit). After several attempts to use the Crisis Disk Recovery instructions from the Acer Aspire Service 5349 manual (Chapter 2, page 28) to create a USB drive to restore / rebuild my BIOS, I finally found a process that worked.

Obviously, to create USB Crisis Disk you need a laptop of different performance. The following worked for me:

1. Plug in your USB stick (I installed an old 512MB Mini Cruzer USB stick)

2. Select the “Quick Format” option and click “Start”. Then click Next.

4. Zag Find the most popular BIOS update from the acer website for the best model (Acer Aspire 5349). In a great case it was v.1.0.8

5. Unzip the resulting file. Go to a folder named Windows, extract ZQR.fd from ZQR_108W.exe and buy Universal Extractor v1.6.1 or 7-Zip v9.20

6. Download Phoenix / Insyde v2.50 tool. Unzip the music file and run PhoenixTool.exe. Then, in this e-book labeled “original BIOS”, download the ZQR.fd file to see if you really need to rename the ZQR.fd file to something else (like me .BIN,. WPH and .ROM which can be seen on the main web. which can be confusing!). In my case, PhoenixTool.exe told me to leave the file name ZQR.fd. This is your first file to copy a lot more to your USB stick.

7. Then download WINCRISIS v.1.0.0.4. Unzip the files and copy the following files to the USB stick: MINIDOS.SYS, PHLASH16.EXE and BIOS.WPH

For clarification or generalization, the USB stick should only contain the files: ZQR.fd, MINIDOS.SYS, PHLASH16.EXE, and BIOS.WPH. There should be no other files or folders.

8. Then make sure your Acer Aspire 5349 is turned off and unplugged in case someone has corrupted BIOS (I installed the batterytor into your laptop). I connected the USB port to the left USB port of the laptop (i.e. I also added a good value of 2, not very good if it depends on which port your organization is using!)

9. Then, for the laptop to enter BIOS recovery mode, press the new Fn + Esc key and reconnect the power. Hold down the Fn + Esc keys and press the power button. Press and hold the Fn Esc + keys for about 5 seconds. The purple power light on the laptop should start blinking and the USB drive may turn on, which hopefully indicates that the person’s BIOS is being restored. The computer will restart once and you can use your laptop again! In my case, the recovery took about 2-3 minutes.

What Can I Do To Prevent This From Happening In The Future?

If you have an extreme connection, for example, at home, you can run a scan of your device for vimustache to make sure it is not infected with malware.
