lp: list file not possible: server error service unavailable

I’ve seen all sorts of posts on the net that describe a similar problem – this one – but not real solutions that make sense to me. Here’s what’s going on:

I have a Core Fedora 3_64 on an Athlon 64 3000+ server running on a system with random RAID5, 1GB RAM, other EIDE drives that I use for copies and multiple users. I’ve always had a strong aversion to CUPS (can’t seem to get it to work reliably in my environment ..) and installed this system on lprng – disable the specific cupsd daemon. I seem to be able to help you correctly connect all the printers that I have connected in different ways when I (or another user) manually instruct the real system to print something. Noises fromlprngtool can configure and manage backup printers very well (albeit a little slower ….).

The problem I am facing can be described by running a shell program on crontab which contains a nice “lp” command: lp -dsystem / Absolute / pathname. Every time a set of scripts is run, I get an error in my email:

lp: Unable to print in list: error-server-service-unavailable

When I run the same software from the command line, it looks good. If I enter the lp command at the command label, it works fine.

I – think – it’s almost certainly CUPS, but a bug – like Microsoft’s Blue Screen Of Death – there isn’t enough useful information in this bug draft to try to debug something. Many people tell me that the error happened by accident – this is not the best indicator of when WHY? He doesn’t even claim for certain that this is a CUPS bug, although I believe it is. Families that do well with CUPS (and / or FC3) should slow down to a decent pace and consider setting higher error messages and leaving the node to the front The printer switch is in place until the CUPS starts working. Valid for ALL. Oh, I say.

lp unable to print file server-error-service-unavailable

I expect that perhaps the FC3 kernel and / or some Bourne Again wrapper or cron daemon will be forced to expect CUPS and only CUPS to provide printing services.

Anyway – if someone from the outside can help figure out EXACTLY what might ultimately cause this error, I would appreciate your input. Thanks.

I’ve seen all sorts of posts on the net describing a similar problem, but no real solution or grammar makes sense to me. Here’s what exactly happens:

I have a Fedora Core 3_64 on a 64 Athletic 3000+ server with a RAID5 array, 1GB of RAM, a few additional EIDE drives that I use for backups, and a few users on a CUPS system (this may not work reliably in my environment. .) and I installed this process system on lprng – turn off the cupsd daemon. I seem to be able to connect all the printers I’m suffering from differently when I (or another user) manually prompt the program to print something. P It looks like lprngtool can configure and manage print devices (although usually a little slower …).

The problem I usually run into is when I run a shell script that references a crontab that contains “lp”: lp -dsystem / Absolute / pathname. Every time the script runs, I get an error message sent to everyone by email:

If I run the same script from the command line, it’s okay. If I enter this lp command directly into the purchase line unchanged, it works fine.

I – think it’s a CUPS bug, but – sort of like Microsoft Screen Blue Of Death – there really isn’t enough useful information in this error message to try to debug something. It just tells me that an error has occurred – bad reminder WHY? He doesn’t even mention for sure that this is a CUPS bug, although I think it is. People who are good at CUPS (and / or FC3) really need to take a step back and think about posting some of the best error messages and leaving the printer switches in place until CUPS is working properly It is true for everyone. Oh, I’m talking now.

I suspect that perhaps FC3 and / or the kernel, the Bourne Again custom shell, or the cron daemon were completely messed up, expecting CUPS and only CUPS to handle print services.
