g.NEF is Nikon’s RAW file format exclusively for Nikon cameras. RAW image files, sometimes called digital negatives, contain all of the image information captured by the camera’s touch process, as well as image metadata (identification of the camera and its objects, lens used, and other information).

UPDATE: On July 26, 2011, Microsoft has released a new codec pack for Windows 7 that contains many Nikon digital SLRs. The latest codec pack can be downloaded initially from here. The new mirrorless DSLRs are not yet supported, but Microsoft is expected to release updates to the rest of the codec in the future. This

for those who really don’t know what a “RAW codec” is, even if you import a RAW image from your camera to your computer, if your computer doesn’t support this RAW content, it will use RAW don’t show a thumbnail of the video content. I installed it on my 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate and the installation went gladko and without too much trouble (requires reboot after installation).

After restarting the machine, I went to the RAW file and stuff! – all the thumbnails of the images are uploaded, so I was able to see the images in RAW format:

The coolest thing is that some images can now be viewed in Windows Photo Viewer:

I am very happy with the results and can finally see all RAW files outside of my cameras without having to open each file individually to view images. So if you’re looking for a good new 64-bit codec for Nikon, perhaps other cameras, I highly recommend the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack!
