Windows Vista introduces a new image resolution stack called the Windows Imaging Component (WIC), which also uses it in Windows Explorer to create thumbnails for most image file formats.
Third party vendors are likely to use WIC codecs to support sensitive image formats such as Nikon NEF and Canon CR2 raw files. Therefore, Windows Explorer will display thumbnails for these formats even if the appropriate codec is installed. Microsoft is working on a page with links to applicable codecs.
Unfortunately, there is no publicly available codec developed for the Photoshop PSD format, but the Microsoft Expression Blend 3 design method posted (which by the way is not a simple term surprising for WPF and Silverlight designs) contains such a codec. When you install Blend 3, the PSD codec is installed automatically.
For those who don’t need Blend and don’t want to install it In addition, there is a small hacking guide on how to buy a codec (256KB DLL) and use it separately:
- Download a trial version of Microsoft Expression Blend 3.0 (3.0.1927.0 07/20/2009): Link
- Open ‘Blend_Trial_en.exe’ from the appropriate locations (1) Use the 7-Zip program, for example, in the ‘Setup’ subfolder, open ‘BlImp.cab’ then drag ‘PSDCodec.dll’
- Download Visual C ++ 2008. Download the SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) .
- Install the VC ++ runtime by training vcredist_x86.exe from step (3) above.
- Copy PSDCodec.dll from step (2), for example, to a location on your hard disk. “C: Program Files PSDCodec”
- Register the codec admin prompt by running the following command: regsvr32 “C: Program Files PSDCodec PSDCodec.dll”
That’s it, Windows Vista Explorer should soon display thumbnails of all PSD files saved with Photoshop’s Maximum Compatibility option.
As a side effect, people who care about Image Wic like FastPictureViewer Professional will automatically benefit from installing the codec and using it to help you open and viewthe same PSD on PC with complete loyalty.
Update. Interestingly, newer versions of FastPictureViewer have codecs that Windows Explorer will surely pick up, so PSD files and other visual formats that are not natively supported by Explorer show up in the file manager, which keeps track of the installation.
You can probably use the free Pictus alternative. It hasn’t been updated for a long time, but it does support Windows PSD in File Explorer even in Windows newbies if you help enable this option during installation.
Last but not least, there are free SageThumbs that do the same.
