I tested a batch of Adaptec AHA-2940AU PCI SCSI Adapters today.

Well test these cards, I’ve had a lot of fake Quantum Atlas IV 10,000 18.2GB drives connected via SCA-to-50p SCSI adapters. The ID is set to 0 and 0 (adapter ID 7). Tests were carried out on a great old BCM-SQ-599 motherboard with SiS5511 chipset supporting PCI 2.1.

In BIOS 1.30, in addition to 1.34.2, both drives were recognized correctly and were found to be fully usable. In BIOS 1.21, this disk (ID 0) was first recognized correctly, but then the recognition stuck / timed out and the disk was only available initially. The limitation is likely to be clearly a BIOS limitation, as replacing the proposed BIOS 1.21 and 1.30 was the main issue with the BIOS chip, not the PCB.

I took a look at the Adaptec web store and while they still have support information and facts for the AHA-2940AU, I found no evidence of BIOS version dependency, just a comment that the BIOS could not be flashed.

So:
– To get good support for the painTheir disks, you need BIOS> = 1.30
– BIOS 1.34.2 only works on detailed cards and these cards don’t like mature BIOS.
