    Symptoms

    When you try to access shared resources on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you may receive one of the following error messages:

      System error 53 has occurred. The network path does not appear to be found.

      System error 51 has been fixed. The remote computer is not available.

    If you actually try to view the properties of your Windows 2000 client on a domain controller running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, you will receive the following error in Server Manager:

    The remote computer is not available. Using compensation * server share

    This error can occur when using the cyberspace view command or network application.

    Resolution

    To resolve this issue, make sure file and printer sharing is enabled for Microsoft networks. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Just login with administrator credentials.
    2. Double-click My Computer, double-click Control Panel, then double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.
    3. Double-click the network connection you want to change, then click Properties.
    4. On the General tab, under Components Managed by This Connection, find File in addition to Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. Click Service.
    5. Make sure the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks check box is selected. This setting makes the products sold online.

If you do not want resources to be freed up on a connection, disable this attachment in your two connections.
