In the Assigned Tasks window, you can configure Windows XP to open specific programs, utility bills, and documents on a schedule that you specify. Unfortunately, in many cases it can only open programs and documents in Signal. Unless you are ready to enter your special codes, called switches, the Scheduled Tasks window will not be able to force you to complete the item once they are opened. To expand the Task Scheduler illustration (see 15-10), select Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Scheduled Tasks. The “Schedule Tasks” window will open, initially containing a single icon (unless the method you installed has scheduled a task) labeled “Add Scheduled Task”.

Adding A Task To The Schedule

With Scheduled Tasks, you can be sure to schedule any script, program or document whenever it suits you. Scheduled tasks run every time Windows XP starts and run in the background.

Before you can plan your business, you need to create one or more tasks.

1. Open scheduled tasks.
2. Double click Add Scheduled Job.
3. Follow the instructions in the Scheduled Tasks Wizard.

Open
• Scheduled Tasks, click Start, select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks.
• If you want to configure additional options for a task, on the last page of the wizard, select the Open additional properties for this project when I click Finish button.
• Make sure the date and time on your computer is correct, as scheduled tasks depend on this information to complete scheduled tasks. To view changes or this type of information, double-click the time display in the taskbar.

Once created, scheduled functions can be edited. You can change the software, schedule, or specifics for a specific task.

1. Open scheduled tasks.
2. Right-click the task you want to modify and select Properties.

• Scheduled Tasks, click Start, select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, or click Scheduled Tasks.
• If you are from Change the user account for your program or the program you are running, everyone must enter a password for the user account.
• If a program task typically requires command line parameters, enter them in the Run box and find the path to the task.
• If the destination path of the destination program contains spaces, enclose the entire path in double quotes (“”). For example:
  “C: Program Files Windows Media Player Mplayer2.exe”
• Make sure your computer’s shutdown date and time are correct, as scheduled tasks rely on this information to complete scheduled tasks. To check the change or this information, double-click the appropriate time display in the taskbar.

For tasks that are needed for a longer period of time, you can completely delete the group.

1. Opens scheduled tasks.
2. Right-click the specific task you want to delete and choose Delete.

• Deleting a scheduled task simply removes the task from the schedule. A running executable task cannot be deleted from the hard disk.

If a task starts while you are using your computer, you can stop it and restart it later.

1. Open scheduled tasks.
2. Right-click the task you want to run and select End Task.

• Scheduled Tasks, click Start, select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks.
• When a scheduled task is continuously started and then stopped, End Task does not really stop all other programs that would normally start the scheduled task.
• If you stop running a scheduled installation, you may experiencethere is a delay (up to three minutes) before the end of the commitment period.
• To organize a stopped task, click a task, right-click and select “Run.”

You should be able to temporarily disable or pause nearly scheduled tasks and then resume tasks later.

1. Open scheduled tasks.
2. Under Advanced, select Stop Task Scheduler.

Open
• Scheduled Tasks, click Start, select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click Scheduled Tasks.
• The pause scheduler is useful when you don’t want scheduled tasks to run when you install software or start another program (like a game).
• Tasks scheduled to run while scheduled tasks are paused will not only run until the next scheduled time.
• To continue scheduling for all tasks only, click Continue nscheduling tasks “in the” Advanced “menu.
